when i knocked, you opened the door
you entertained me as a guest,
and in return, i cased the joint.
i counted all the doors and rooms and windows and walls
i assessed your possessions and their value
i politely helped myself to the layout of your mind
so that next time i could enter uninvited
i know it may come as a surprise to you
to have your home invaded by someone you trust
but perhaps at least you can trust my motives
i don’t want to take the things you own from you
i just want to know that they’re accessible to me
in case i should need them.
for example; i will not steal your wit
because it will be right where i left it when I go.
i cannot steal your memories,
because they are affixed to your form
but I can use their style, their texture, their kiss as a muse
and when i find my own roof ready to buckle,
i can seek shelter in the refuge of a foundation better built
